A quick back-story: A Shepard Tone, or Shepard-risset glissando, is an auditory illusion, where sounds layered octaves cause a perception that the sound is endlessly rising or falling in pitch. The app "ShepardTone" is a unique software interface to generate these sounds instantly, despite the fact that Shepard Tone illusions are used all the time, in movies, games, and more, such as the famous Mario never-ending staircase or notably, the film Dunkirk, which uses it continuously throughout the film. Christopher Nolan explicitly stated that he wrote the script for Dunkirk according to the mathematical principles of the Shepard tone, the auditory illusion deeply influenced the film’s narrative structure from its very inception.
