Catch & Release: Noting

Catch & Release: Nothing is a ledger for a physical Bluetooth button. Press the button once when a certain thought or feeling arises. Press it twice once you've let it go. The app records both the catch and the release. REQUIRES A FLIC 2 BUTTON The button is the only way to record anything — there is deliberately no way to mark an episode from the app. A Flic 2 is about $35 each at flic.io. The app pairs with one or more of them over Bluetooth. THE PRACTICE Choose a thought or feeling you want to understand better — anger, anxiety, craving, fear, negativity, tension, anything. When it arises, press the button. The gesture is the same for whatever you've chosen, wherever you are. When you've released it, press twice. Press and hold to undo a mistake; press and hold again to clear anything pending. One button, one thought or feeling. To follow more than one, carry more than one button. Each keeps its own record and knows nothing of the other. THE LEDGER The Dashboard shows how often episodes arise and how long they last, across today, seven days, or thirty. The Log lists every record, and every record is editable. Export produces JSON and CSV — the corpus is meant to outlive the app. PRIVACY No accounts, no networking of any kind, no analytics. Everything stays on your phone. Bluetooth is the only permission the app asks for, and it is used only to talk to your own button. Nothing here is scored. There is no streak, no target, no praise for letting go and no lament for holding on.
